⌝ Digital Folklore through proceduralism & primitive machine learning. ⌞
How do symbols and stories change as they are passed on from one generation to the next and how do these retellings inform future aesthetic traditions in a digital first environment?
ID0LS is a series exploring Digital Folklore through proceduralism & primitive machine learning. The work explores how cultural archetypes are imagined and stories told and retold over time in digital-first communities.
An automated system imagines a myriad of new procedural folk-art idols which are then fed in as the dataset of a simple machine learning model. The ML model then passes on its memory and interpretation of the Idols as retellings of the cultural tradition.
Digital First Customs
A tradition is typically seen as a belief or behaviour (folk custom) passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past.
As digital-first customs and stories are becoming more pervasive within the core of our culture, the line between our digital and the physical world is blurred. This is having seismic effects on what it means to interpret symbols and build meaning within communities.
